Pythagoras was rumored to have taught behind a curtain. Those on his side of the curtain were considered the esoteric members of his following. Those on the other side (the audience) were considered the exoteric followers. Please note this seemingly trivial fact is the basis for so many different rituals involving a curtain. And is used many times in explaining the mysteries without people understanding it's origins, i.e., behind the veil, rendering the veil, the enterer, the high priestess.
