Holy Guardian Angel (HGA), not to be confused with fairy godmothers and guardian angles/spirit guides and such. The HGA can be looked at as the ultimate destination of the mage.

I know this is a highly technical point about: what is the Angel. It can be seen as your higher self and all that is not you that you as a human can comprehend, or it could be said that it is all you are capable of, or one's true purpose in life. The Angel isn't other than you, but it's also a lot more than you are. Union while in the human body with one's HGA is pretty much the most one can hope for as a mage...but that doesn't have to happen if one can have the conversation and knowledge of the HGA. This will do.
In a way, you could say that the Angel is the only way to get enough information to determine: why we're here. Because we cannot look down from above and see the divine pattern any other way (if you are one with god/dess and have attained Nirvana, purpose is not an issue) while retaining the human form.
In the West, a tradition exists of uniting or conversing with the Angel, instead of (Eastern) unite with god/dess. In the East, it might considered materialist (a delay) to work with the HGA instead of the one god. The trouble with this Eastern tradition is: Which one is the ONE? There always seems to be one more god beyond The God.
